چکیده

The high-latitude Galactic H I cloud toward the extragalactic radio source 3C 225 is characterized by very narrow 21 cm emission and absorption indicative of a very low H I spin temperature of about 20 K. Through high-resolution optical spectroscopy, we report the detection of strong, very narrow Na I absorption corresponding to this cloud toward a number of nearby stars. Assuming that the turbulent H I and Na I motions are similar, we derive a cloud temperature of 20 −8 K (in complete agreement with the 21 cm results) and a line-of-sight turbulent velocity of 0.37 ± 0.08 km s from a comparison of the H I and Na I absorption linewidths. We also place a firm upper limit of 45 pc on the distance of the cloud, which situates it well inside the Local Bubble in this direction and makes it the nearest-known cold diffuse cloud discovered to date. Physical Properties of the Local Interstellar Medium

The observed properties of the local interstellar medium (LISM) have been facilitated by a growing ultraviolet and optical database of high spectral resolution observations of interstellar absorption toward nearby stars. Such observations provide insight into the physical properties (e.g., temperature, turbulent velocity, and depletion onto dust grains) of the population of warm clouds (e.g., 7...

Exotic clouds in the local interstellar medium

The neutral interstellar medium (ISM) inside the Local Bubble (LB) has been known to have properties typical of the warm neutral medium (WNM). However, several recent neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption experiments show evidence for the existence of at least several cold diffuse clouds inside or at the boundary of the LB, with properties highly unusual relative to the traditional cold neutral medi...

Two - component model of the interaction of an interstellar cloud with surrounding hot plasma

We present a two-component gasdynamic model of an interstellar cloud embedded in a hot plasma. It is assumed that the cloud consists of atomic hydrogen gas, interstellar plasma is quasineutral. Hydrogen atoms and plasma protons interact through a charge exchange process. Magnetic fields and radiative processes are ignored in the model. The influence of heat conduction within plasma on the inter...

Dynamics of a vapor bubble near a thin elastic plate

Numerical and experimental results show that during the collapse phase of a vapor bubble near a rigid boundary, in the absence of strong buoyancy forces, a liquid micro jet is developed on the side of the bubble far from the rigid surface and directed towards it. Numerical and experimental results also show that, in the case of a bubble near a free surface, during the collapse phase of the bubb...

J an 2 00 5 Chandra Observations of MBM 12 and Models of the Local Bubble

Chandra observations toward the nearby molecular cloud MBM12 show unexpectedly strong and nearly equal foreground O VIII and O VII emission. As the observed portion of MBM12 is optically thick at these energies, the emission lines must be formed nearby, coming either from the Local Bubble (LB) or charge exchange with ions from the Sun. Equilibrium models for the LB predict stronger O VII than O...
